Harmonic Cavities and Longitudinal Beam Stability in Electron Storage Rings∗
نویسندگان
چکیده
Harmonic cavities have been used in storage rings to increase beam lifetime and Landau damping by lengthening the bunch. The need for lifetime increase is particularly great in the present generation of low to medium energy synchrotron light sources where the small transverse beam sizes lead to realitively short lifetimes from large-angle intrabeam ( Touschek) scattering. We review the beam dynamics of harmonic radiofrequency (RF) systems and discuss effects on longitudinal beam stability. Landau Cavities in Third Generation Synchrotron Light Sources
The new 3 generation synchrotron light sources coming up are designed for a small transverse emittance. But the small beam size gives a low Touschek lifetime and calls for good beam stability. In some storage rings higher harmonic cavities are installed for bunch lengthening to overcome the lifetime limitations. The higher harmonic cavities also induce Landau damping that improves the beam stab...
متن کاملStorage ring free electron laser dynamics in presence of an auxiliary harmonic radio frequency cavity
In a Storage Ring Free Electron Laser (SRFEL) there is a strong interdependence between the laser beam and the electron beam from which the laser is generated. The Super ACO storage ring has a second Radio Frequency (RF) cavity at the 5th harmonic of the main RF cavity. It is used to shorten the bunch length, thereby enhancing the laser gain. Employing this RF harmonic cavity instabilities are ...
متن کاملComputed Transient Beam Loading Effects with Harmonic RF Systems
Harmonic cavities have been used in storage rings to lengthen bunches and increase beam lifetimes dominated by Touschek scattering. Transient beam loading in the harmonic cavities generated by asymmetries in the fill pattern can cause significant variation of the beam phase and bunch length along the bunch train when the longitudinal restoring force has been reduced, resulting in a significant ...
متن کاملGenerating ultrashort coherent soft X-ray radiation in storage rings using angular-modulated electron beams.
A technique is proposed to generate ultrashort coherent soft x-ray radiation in storage rings using angular-modulated electron beams. In the scheme a laser operating in the TEM01 mode is first used to modulate the angular distribution of the electron beam in an undulator. After passing through a special beam line with nonzero transfer matrix element R54, the angular modulation is converted to d...
متن کاملInfluence of the Momentum Compaction upon Landau Cavity Stability*
A fourth-harmonic Landau radiofrequency (RF) cavity suppresses coupled bunch instabilities and increases the beam lifetime of the Aladdin electron storage ring. When the storage ring is operated with a small momentum compaction, instabilities limit the utility of the Landau cavity. Analytic modeling and simulations suggest that instabilities result from fast mode-coupling between the dipole a...
